When it comes to buying property in Spain in recent years it is common to hear something like ” in Europe it is not the standard that people have home ownership.” The latest survey by Bloomberg and Eurostat denies that common belief.
It is certainly true that there are European countries with much smaller numbers than Spain, however, contrary to popular belief Spain is not by far the country with the highest percentage of home ownership.
According to Bloomberg and Eurostat Romania, Lithuania and Slovakia are the countries that are heading the list. Spain is only found at the eighth position. At the bottom of the list are Germany , Austria and France.
If we take a closer look at Spain , the provinces with the highest percentage of home ownership are Vitoria, Jaén and Huelva, with more than 90 % each. Cadiz, Barcelona and Melilla, on the contrary, are the Spanish provinces with the lowest percentages.
The Spanish province with the lowest percentage, Cadiz, records a 58,41% home ownership and the next one up reaches over 70% according to a report by RR de Acuña & Asociados consultancy.
